Whether it’s a barbecue, day at the beach or a night of fireworks, it might seem like a great idea to include your pets in your party celebrations.
But while the festive atmosphere will be fun for you, it could be unhealthy for your dog. Here are some tips to make sure your pets are not put under any unnecessary stress or trauma.
- Alcoholic beverages can be poisonous to pets. Keep drinks out of reach, and do not leave them unattended.
- Only use sun protection and insect repellent products designed for use on animals.
- Avoid the temptation to slip your pets treats from the grill. A change in diet can cause stomach upset, and ingredients such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes and raisins, salt and yeast dough can be toxic.
- Keep citronella candles, insect coils, oil products, matches and lighter fluid out of reach.
- Never use fireworks around pets. Unused fireworks contain toxins, and lit fireworks can cause severe burns and trauma.
Loud noise from fireworks can be especially frightening for animals. Follow these tips to reduce stress associated with fireworks displays:
- Keep your pets inside at home in a safe, quiet area.
- Your pet might become destructive when frightened, so remove items that could be destroyed or that might be dangerous if chewed.
- Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company if he's left alone.
- Some pets are seriously distressed by loud noises. If your pet dislikes thunder, speak with your vet.
- Do not leave pets outside unattended. Even animals that are used to staying within a fence or on a chain could become fearful enough to panic and escape.
- Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly.
