Debt solicitors urge debtors to take prompt action

Debt solicitors are, however, advising that people make the most of this extra time to try and put their finances in order. Debt solicitors emphasise the importance of tackling such problems as early as possible and warn that if ignored they only snowball.

Debt solicitors are recommending that people make the most of the 30 days "breathing space" to be provided by debt collection agencies from the end of May.

Debt solicitors are advising struggling borrowers that the Credit Service Association (CSA), which represents debt recovery agencies, will soon require its members to refrain from pursuing a debt for a period of 30 days, provided that specialist debt advise is being sought.

Debt solicitors urge debtors to take prompt action

Debt solicitors are, however, advising that people make the most of this extra time to try and put their finances in order. Debt solicitors emphasise the importance of tackling such problems as early as possible and warn that if ignored they only snowball. One way to achieve this is by maintaining a dialogue with your creditors to try and reassure them that you are doing your best to find a solution, debt solicitors say.

Debt solicitors say that, ideally, such debt problems should be dealt with before a debt collection agency even needs to be called. Debt solicitors find that people often ignore the warning letters they receive at an earlier stage which naturally exacerbates the problem, especially as interest charged can be highly punitive.

The changes announced by the CSA follow the news last year, welcomed by debt solicitors, that more people are seeking advice from organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureaux.
